Prevention Services

Hyacinth’s Prevention Services are called Project POW! (Prevention Outreach Works). We offer multiple programs in each of our regional offices. Each intervention is based on research that demonstrated it could really help someone prevent HIV infection. We have interventions for women, men, and people who are HIV-positive. Depending on what is most comfortable for you, you can learn about HIV prevention through one-on-one confidential counseling or in small groups. We know that talking about sex and drug use is private and sensitive in nature, so be assured that Hyacinth is committed to your emotional safety as well as your health. And we’ll work with you to help you set your own prevention goals. HIV infection is preventable. Each of us has the ability to protect our communities and ourselves.

Prevention Services for Women

These services include group and individual sessions that focus on ethnic and gender pride. You will gain HIV knowledge and skills around sexual risk reduction behaviors and decision-making. In addition, we provide support of HIV testing so that you know your HIV status. We’ll help you stay HIV-free.

Prevention Services for Men

You are welcome to attend group and individual sessions that focus on how to protect yourself against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. We discuss sexual relationship dynamics and the social and psychological influences that racism and homophobia have on HIV risk behaviors and decision-making. In addition, we provide support of HIV testing so that you know your HIV status. We’ll help you stay HIV-free.

Prevention Services for People Living With HIV

Group and individual sessions will focus on helping you to develop skills and build self-efficacy about new behaviors. We help you to learn decision-making and problem-solving skills that will enable you to make informed and safe decisions about disclosure and sexual behavior that will keep you and your partners healthy.

The Living Out Loud Project

This program provides a safe space for young gay and bisexual men of diverse backgrounds. Together, we mobilize ourselves to reduce sexual risk taking, provide and encourage regular HIV testing, help you to build positive social connections, and support each other to have safer sex and stay HIV-free. Visit us on the Project LOL Mpowerment Friend Page.

The Drop-in Center and Syringe Access Project

A safe and caring place, the drop-in center provides testing for hepatitis, pregnancy, and STDs. In addition, clean syringes are available, as well as wound care and safer injection education and drug treatment referrals. To ensure that you maintain the best health possible, we also provide flu shots and vaccines for hepatitis A/B and tetanus. Hot meals, shower, and laundry facilities are available 5 days a week.
